Cumberland Schools Sustainability Expo 2022

We’re thrilled that our services as a social enterprise were procured through local government for the first time. Collective Leisure joined Cumberland City Council to deliver the Schools Sustainability Expo 2022 at Merrylands on 26 and 27 October.

Our brief was to deliver adapted and modified games that show examples of excellence, dedication, and foster social inclusion. The Expo provided local primary school students the opportunity to participate in educational workshops to gain a greater understanding of environmental issues, social sustainability, Aboriginal heritage, wildlife conservation, and inclusive sports.

Three sports coaches and two volunteers delivered five multisport sessions each day to increase the students’ physical and mental well-being in a fun and engaging way. More than thirty kids attended each session in a round-robin format.

Sports coaches Carmin, Hamid, and Merna led the children through multiple games and sports activities including “Cops and Robbers”, “Freeze and Go” and “Hot Potato”. “Cops and robbers” was the game of choice and was enjoyed by all of the children.

With our inclusive approach, mini-games were organised for children who were “out” so that they were always active, practicing their hand-eye coordination through a variety of ball games.

We’ve received lots of positive feedback about our sessions. Our sports coaches had a fantastic time and enjoyed promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyle habits to the children. One of them noted “It was a great honour to work with Cumberland Council.”
